Give Love Away

I remember singing the following song at school assemblies and now decades later, I sometimes find myself bursting into song when it pops into my head. It’s about giving love away and when you give it away you end up with even more.

As a child these words seemed so simple. It was the melody that stayed with me, however now as an adult with children of my own, I realise the truth in these words.
Love is something that everyone needs to flourish. When we don’t get it we end up with deep issues that sometimes never get resolved.
I’ve seen adults that are so giving, warm and successful and when I look at their childhood, I notice that they were in a close relationship with at least one adult and received a lot of warmth and love from them.
On the other hand, some people I meet seem so troubled and I notice that they had an upbringing around lots of people but never a close relationship with at least one nurturing adult like a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle.

Lao Tzu said: “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

I find this to be so true. Feeling loved can give you wings, love can give you an invincible feeling, confidence… you could say a safety net of some sort.

And so this song comes to me now and again, in fact, I sang these memorable words to my children just the other day.
I wanted them to know that giving is more important than receiving.
I wanted them to know that you lose nothing by going the extra mile by making someone happy and that in fact there is NO better feeling in this world than to have made someone smile, knowing full well that it was YOU that made a difference to someone’s day.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s words come to mind:

“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.”

We are all more than capable of giving something to someone.
I am a firm believer in giving money to charity, to those that need it, but I’m finding that sometimes it’s not just money that can help an individual. There are so many ways to help someone, to make them feel wanted and loved; your time, your effort, your encouragement, your embrace can go a long way.
There are so many ways to show you care and the best thing of all… each one of us the world over is capable of giving those things. We just need to dig deep into our hearts and make the small sacrifice.

imageSo here is the song… if you know the melody to it, please do sing along with me here (try not to clap and sway though lol)….

Magic Penny

(Malvina Reynolds, 1950s Folk Song)

Love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

It’s just like a magic penny,
Hold it tight and you won’t have any.
Lend it, spend it, and you’ll have so many
They’ll roll all over the floor.

For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

Money’s dandy and we like to use it,
But love is better if you don’t refuse it.
It’s a treasure and you’ll never lose it
Unless you lock up your door.

For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

So let’s go dancing till the break of day,
And if there’s a piper, we can pay.
For love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

For love is something if you give it away,
Give it away, give it away.
Love is something if you give it away,
You end up having more.

I know I need to do more for people. It’s so difficult to get wound up in the drudgery of daily life, that sometimes it is easy to forget that people out there need your time, your smile, your encouragement and love.
It’s even harder to remember that by doing so, your life will feel more fulfilled than by just trying to make yourself and your immediate family happy.

So I make the intention to give some love away… today, tomorrow and the day after that. I’m starting by giving my love to you by writing this (it does count right?!) 😉
Let’s hope I can remember these words even on the days when I feel I need love more than others I know.

I’ll leave you with Mother Teresa’s encouraging words:

“Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.”

Do you remember this song? Is there a song that stayed with you from your childhood that means more to you now than it did then? What does giving love mean to you? Do share! 🙂

  1. Hey totally agree with your words and the song! It’s sad that we often think
Of giving in terms of monetary value, rather than just the many simple things like a smile, a hug, or without even knowing or intending being there at the right time. Anything that can make a little difference to someone in a positive way is giving love. Imagine if everyone did that.. The world would be a much nicer and perhaps safer place to be in. Gosh! That last bit sound a little morbid! I guess that should be an encouragement for me to do that little more…

Thanks for the encouraging words as a reminder. I sure felt the love! Thanks xx

    • Simes the world would indeed be a much nicer and safer place! SO true! If only we could all remember to give in whatever way we can on a daily basis, without having to be reminded or cajoled.
Thank you so much for your kind words… sooo glad you felt the love : ) xxx

  9. Hello hello! I’ve never heard of the song “Magic Penny”, but I’m born and raised in Holland, so I think that’s the reason, haha. I loved reading this though! Always fun to learn something new 🙂

  10. I love this post. It’s so true…love…that is the fuel we need to give and receive in order to thrive; to find joy; to live a fulfilled life. It’s so simple yet sometimes so hard to do and to remember. I can tell this is a post that will stay with me for a while. It’s these types of reminders that help build the humanity in all of us. I haven’t heard the song, but I loved the lyrics. A song from my elementary school years was called Pass It On. (it’s a religious hymn, as I went to Catholic School). Like you, it’s the melody that I was drawn to and loved loved loved to sing it – never paying attention to the lyrics. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how poignant the words were.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words! You are so right, it is so simple yet so hard to remember to do on a daily basis!
Pass It On sounds like a great hymn with possibly a similar undertone.
It’s funny how we can get through so much of life and then something from our youth can suddenly start to mean something to us. 🙂

  11. I don’t know the song, but your post reminds me of a common analogy of the river Jordan and the two lakes in it (I forget which – maybe Galilee and the dead sea) but anyway – one lake, the river flows into, crystal clear and sparkling, and the river flows out of, leaving the lake full and beautiful as it nonetheless passes the water on. The dead sea, though, just takes, and it’s stagnant and rotten around the edges, because the water flows in and gets stuck.

    I think love’s a bit like that.
